Dodo over Devon

Well, if you thought the idea of pigs taking to the air was a rarity, how about a flying Dodo? For the first time in history a Dodo will be launched into the air in Southernhay, Exeter on Friday 26 May, proudly signaling the start of Devon Wildlife Trust’s Wildlife Festival.

The flight of the 6ft willow Dodo will begin the three week programme of events for people all over Devon which runs from Friday 26 May to Saturday 17 June and coincides with the BBC’s Springwatch programme and aims to celebrate Devon’s diverse wildlife. The events include a nature reserve open day at Meshaw Moor, Wellie Throwing and Worm Charming at Haven Holidays in Exmouth and an opportunity to look around the site of the charity’s new headquarters amongst other fun packed activities around the county.

DWT’s Director, Paul Gompertz, said: “Back in 1989 we held the first ever Wildlife Week and created a Dodo Roadshow which toured around the county with the message ‘Conservation or extinction? – The choice is yours.’ Now seventeen years on we have reincarnated a Dodo because people still haven’t got the message. This year, with climate change threatening to make matters much worse for wildlife the message is more important than ever.”

Once the Dodo returns to the ground it will travel around the county to many of the Wildlife Festival events to remind people of the threat of extinction to species if we neglect to look after them.

The launch has been made possible thanks to the support from Sir Robert McAlpine who have loaned the use of one of their cranes at Princesshay for the event.

Paul Gompertz added: “This year’s three week long Wildlife Festival gives everyone an opportunity to appreciate Devon’s wildlife. The natural world has a lot to offer – and so does our festival. Taking part is making a statement in support of wildlife, and we continue to need all the support we can get to make sure that Wildlife Festivals in the future still have something to celebrate.”
