North Devon Festival: The timetable and remaining events

June 13, 2006, 11:47 am

The highly successful North Devon festival concludes today and
tomorrow, unfortunately to the tune of heavy rain and dark clouds!
Nevertheless, here’s some information on what’s planned:

Tuesday JUNE 13

Combine the talents of eight primary schools, the music departments of two secondary schools, a composer and drama teacher and what do you get? A Song Cycle. The cycle has drawn inspiration from various places in North Devon - including the Seven Brethren Bank at Barnstaple with its fair and its tragic tale of the seven brothers who died from the plague, to surfing on the waves at Putsborough Beach where Bishop Putta landed in his failed attempt to create a Christian sect in the 9th century.

The children have made comparisons between these places as they are at this present time and what they were like in the past - hence the song cycle’s title: Now and Then.

The students perform this unique cycle at the Queen’s Theatre in Barnstaple.

For more music visit Clayton’s lounge bar for a trip back in time to pre-war Paris with Affinitee. The trio, consisting of a vocalist, accordion and combination of guitar, mandolin and fiddle create a distinctly Parisian atmosphere.

Wednesday JUNE 14

Take an afternoon stroll through the Heddon Valley with a National Trust warden for a rare opportunity to see the High Brown Fritillary butterfly - one of Britain’s most threatened species - in its habitat.

Barnstaple Fringe gets into full swing with a lunchtime gig from Simon Banks in the Gallery Cafe at the Queen’s Theatre, while in the evening expect toe-tapping tunes from Richard Gower at The Olive Branch in Queen Street.

Alternatively there is live music at Jax Music Club, Ilfracombe, with Helena, the voice of Rosetta Life’s Top 10 chart success We Laughed.
