People in North Devon are invited to attend a Creepy Crawly Weekend being hosted by Exmoor Zoo at a garden centre in Barnstaple on Saturday, June 24 and Sunday, June 25, from 11am until 4pm

During the event, which takes place to tie in with National Insect Week, visitors will be able to learn more about creepy crawlies and watch staff take part in bush-tucker style challenges modelled on the TV programme, ‘I am Celebrity Get Me Out of Here’.

Stephen Eddy, Education Officer at Exmoor Zoo, said: “At the event, which takes place at Trelawney at Ashford Garden Centre located in Ashford, we will be inviting staff to eat locusts in front of customers as part of the bush-tucker trials.

“There will also be a free creepy crawly competition trail for youngsters to complete with books about bugs being given to the winners.”

Representatives from Exmoor Zoo will be on hand with a number of exotic insects and animals for people to see and in some cases touch. They will also be available to chat to customers and to answer any insect-related questions.

Displays of mega mini-beasts and a swarm of locusts will also be on show.

Stephen added: “Face-painters will be on hand during the event to transform children into insect look-a-likes and youngsters will have the chance to get free spider-style tattoos.

“Although this event is based around fun activities, it also aims to give people, both young and old, an insight into the world of insects.
