Exeter Festival 2006

July 4, 2006, 5:10 pm

This highlight of Exeter’s cultural calendar has a wide range of music and dance to suit all tastes and ages. With more than 40 live events and exhibitions taking place, the Summer Festival brings together a dynamic programme of classical and contemporary music and dance, ballet, street theatre and comedy.

These website pages allow you to view the whole calendar of events. There are free events like the EDF Energy Party on the Quay on Friday, 7 July and the Family Festival Finale on Sunday 23 July.

Castradiva is a strikingly original piece of theatre which will delight all opera fans. Pop legends, The Animals and Friends will delight 60s fans of all ages while lovers of authentic jazz should look out for Lady Swings the Blues or Chantz. Chispa Negra will bring the passion of flamenco to the Northcott Theatre stage. Classical music highlights include the Borodin Quartet, London Mozart Players, The Philharmonia, clarinettist Emma Johnson and, Young Musician of the Year, pianist Freddie Kempf. The talented Fujita Piano Trio from Japan is a gifted group of sisters. Spectacular ballet will be performed by Independent Ballet Wales and comedy is strong too with two Comedy Clubs at St George’s Hall and Ricky Tomlinson from TV’s The Royle Family appearing at the Northcott Theatre. World music from Nuru Kane and Korean drummers Dulsori will provide two stimulating evenings of entertainment and guitarists of all standards will want to see Xuefei Yang (Barnfield Theatre), Martin Stephenson (Exeter Phoenix) and Eve Selis (Exeter Phoenix) or Alvin Youngblood Hart (Northcott Theatre) in action. Shakespeare in the Gardens this year will be Twelfth Night. Check out the rest of the programme to make sure that you don’t miss out.

And, whatever your tastes, book early to avoid disappointment. For the first time this year, you will be able to book online. This facility will be available from 11 May 2006.

Another innovation is the introduction of a new Exeter Summer Festival Souvenir Programme, a large in-depth programme covering all events. This will contain programme notes for all classical concerts as well as essential reference information for other festival events. The souvenir programme will be available from Summer Festival venues from late June and on the night.

The Council can only stage the Festival with support from sponsorship. Thanks go to all Festival sponsors who have given so generously.

At the beginning of last month I sent a profile and a demonstration CD for the Japanese group METIA as they would like to be considered for a spot in next year’s festival programme. I was wondering if a decision has been made yet as the group is keen to finalise their 2007 schedule. Thanks for another great festival this year.

Hi Jan, this blog is just a news blog for the area, run by Ladys Mile holiday park, and doesn’t have any affiliation with the events it writes about. If you want to contact the organisers of the Exeter Festival, i suggest you see if you can find contact details on the Exeter City Council website: http://www.exeter.gov.uk/

Good luck! :D
