Weekend festival is first for village
October 6, 2006, 11:00 am
The first West Buckland Festival weekend kicks off at 4pm on Friday, in St Peter’s Church, with a Flower and Vegetable Festival alongside an exhibition of unique photographs
More than 200 pictures of the people, the places and work in West Buckland from times past will be on display.
Many of them - some from the 1880s -have not been seen for perhaps 50 years having been recently discovered in an old suitcase in a loft.
If you have any past contacts with West Buckland then go to St Peter’s Church and see this unique exhibition. And while you’re there it’ll be well worthwhile looking at the dozen or so other events taking placeover the weekend.
Friday evening has a very nostalgic feel about it when there is a Memories evening with the guitarist David Cross, evoking memories of the past and getting you tapping your feet.
On Saturday evening the festival has a musical extravaganza with soprano Basira Ward and pianist Stephen Marquiss - an evening that is specially recommended - at 7.30 in St Peter’s.
On Sunday morning at 10.20, Jim Hawkins will lead a two-hour walk through fields and lanes around West Buckland and visit the three different locations of West Buckland School since it opened in 1857.
There’s a lot more besides - an organ recital by Philip Parker, a workshop on making corn dollies with Heather Reed, a film night, coffee morning and cream tea - and the whole weekend will be rounded off with the West Buckland Harvest Festival Songs of Praise at 6pm in St Peter’s Church.
