ROYAL Marines stayed the course on Sunday as they completed a gruelling marathon for charity.

Ex-marine Dave Woodley, 52, was joined by Lympstone-based duo Colour Sgt Laird Webster, 38, and Sgt John Bailey, 27, for the United States Marines Corps Washington Marathon.

The trio ran for the Exeter Leukaemia Fund and all posted good times over the 26-mile course, which starts and finishes at the world-famous Marine Corps’ war memorial.

Veteran runner Dave, of Exmouth, topped his time from last year’s event as he crossed the line in four hours, 25 minutes and 42 seconds.

Clr Sgt Webster, also of Exmouth, was running only his second marathon and came home in just over four hours and four minutes, while marathon debutant Sgt Bailey finished in three hours 40 minutes.

The trio are expected to return to the UK today and thanked all those who offered sponsorship.
