Contemporary Music Festival in Plymouth

The University of Plymouth are holding a contemporary music festival called Voices II between the 23-26 February 2007 at various locations in Plymouth including Portland Square, St Andrew’s Church, music venue ‘The Hub’ as well as the university itself so it would be a great way to visit various different parts of Plymouth.

Over the course of the four days, there will be a combination of DJ’s, opera singers, poets and orchestra’s performing. The main feature will be a new style of music called sonic art which involves lights controlled by a computer conducting an orchestra. The university will also be holding free workshops for the public to attend on a variety of musical subjects including composing music, and the introduction of a new japaneese instrument called the shakuhachi.

Friday 23rd February, 8pm, Old Stones, New Tales’ poems recited by Richard Douglas Pendant at the university, tickets cost £8

Saturday 24 February, 10am, Eduardo R Miranda will present ‘Composing Music with Insect Calls’ at the university, Free entrance
Saturday 24th February, 11am, Nigel Morgan will present ‘Objects of Curiosity and the Composing Continuum’ at the university, Free entrance
Saturday 24th February, 12pm, Sally Beamish will present ‘Knotgrass Elegy’ at the university, Free entrance
Saturday 24th February, 7.30 pm, ‘Cortical Songs’ by John Matthias, St Andrew’s church, Tickets cost £10

Sunday 25th February, 2pm, Extended Shakuhachi Workshop will be led by Mike McInerney, at the university, Free Entrance
Sunday 25th February, 5pm, Mike and Zlatko will give a performance of The Extended Shakuhachi, at the university, Free entrance
Sunday 25th February, 7.30, NocOpera presents ‘CAPE GLOSS – Mathilda’s story’ at the university, tickets cost £10

Monday 26th February, 6pm, Hywel Davies’ Sound Installation Performance, Portland Square, Free entrance
Monday 26th February, 7.30, Spellchecks by Edward Cowie, at the university, Tickets cost £8
