A FULL and varied programme of activities for young people in North Devon will take place over the school summer holidays.

Organised by Devon County Council’s Youth Service in Barnstaple under the title Summer Inspire’, the activities will include a 5-week Visual Inspiration project to create artwork for Georgies - the new youth centre in Barnstaple. Movie Inspiration will provide young people tips and tricks on movie-making using state of the art cameras and editing equipment.

For the more active, there is a 5-week Physical Inspiration course, with competitions, sports, and team challenges, and for music lovers rock nights and an Audible Inspiration programme of DJing, MCing, beatboxing and breakdancing.

One-off activities will also include a Mount Hawk skate trip, rock climbing / coasteering and a beach day with surfing.

The events will culminate in an Inspiration and Celebration event, which will take place in Georgie’s, and will include performances by youth bands, a barbecue, performances from the Audible Inspiration workshops and an unveiling of the new artwork and a premier of the film made during the summer.

Cllr John Smith, Devon County Council’s Executive Member for Children and Young People’s Services said: “Devon’s Youth Service provides a wide variety of different activities to suit all young people’s abilities and needs.

“These courses aim to challenge, educate and stimulate young people’s interests in new and existing skills, as well as providing a focal point where they can meet, socialise and have fun.”

Young people from the North Devon area can also book their tickets for Kongomana through the youth service. Now in its third year, Kongomana takes place at Bicton arena and this year promises to attract over 1,000 young people to its unique mix of live music, battle of the bands competitions, outdoor activities, late night movies, workshops, sports, circus skills and skate ramps, among many other activities.

The activities are open to young people aged between 13 and 19. Some activities are free and for others there is a cost - for further information or to book an activity please contact Grant Edwards at Barnstaple Young People’s Centre on 01271 343762 e-mail grant.edwards@devon.gov.uk.
