THE cream of local producers are gearing up to fly the flag for Devon at a festival showcasing some of the West’s finest food next month.

From succulent steaks and juicy joints to fresh vegetables and clotted cream, farmers from the area will be offering them all at Wellington Food Fair and Festival on September 8, while other events take place on September 9.

The Wellington Food Fair & Festival is part of Wellington Food Town, which launched last December and is aimed at transforming the area into a nationally recognised haven for gastronomists.

As well as retailers and producers from the town and its surrounding parishes, neighbours from over the border in Devon have been invited to take part in the extravaganza and put on a stunning show of the best of the West’s food and drink.

There will be more than 60 stallholders in the town centre event on Saturday September 8, including Uffculme’s Culm Valley Organic Vegetables, Highland Hogs from Chumleigh and Farmhouse Kitchens, based near Crediton.

The street will close to traffic on the Saturday and every kind of produce will be featured from cakes to beers, fish to honey, chocolate and more - plus there will be live bands, children’s entertainment and special events, all kinds of cooked food and demonstrations.

The town’s restaurants and cafes will lay on treats and, together with local shops, are planning to make visitors welcome with everything from a karaoke competition to food tasting, as well as special openings and activities on Sunday September 9.

Sarah Thatcher, who runs Highland Hogs with husband Ian, said: “It’s going to be a great way to show the general public the wonderful food and produce we have in this area.”
